Cantor

I have been blessed to serve as your Cantor since the Summer of 2011. When I first came to Or Chadash I was still in seminary, this was my first opportunity to serve a congregation as their sole Cantor. My how times have changed! Over the years our relationship has grown to one of mutual respect and trust. I have finished seminary where I have been ordained both as a Rabbinic Pastor (feel free to ask) and as a spiritual director through the Alliance for Jewish Renewal, a trans-denominational program which is designed for folks like me who are working on their second or third career. Both investitures have complemented my musical gifts, adding a deeper dimension to my role at Or Chadash. I still believe that music is one of the most powerful tools that we have to establish a connection with the Divine, and I am so fortunate to have found a community who shares that passion. I live in Allentown, PA, so I have quite a commute, but when you have found a spiritual community that feels like home, distance becomes less consequential.

In addition to my part-time responsibilities here at Or Chadash, I am also a full-time chaplain at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown. My responsibilities at the hospital have increased over the past couple of years, so along with my increasing age I need to be more mindful about my own limitations. While I once considered retirement as an option, I’m thrilled that we were able to work out a plan where I could continue to serve in both capacities without wearing myself down. I find my presence here at Or Chadash to be a crucial element in my own spiritual practice, a source of joy that provides balance to my soul. I hope to continue to serve as your cantor for a while to come.

Many Bles-sings,

Kathy

Richard F. Steinbrink
Rabbi Emeritus

Or Chadash is blessed with having the continued dedication and involvement of our long-time Rabbi and current Rabbi Emeritus, Rabbi Richard F. Steinbrink.

After serving as spiritual leader for a number of different temples, Rabbi Steinbrink served as Associate Rabbi and then Senior Rabbi at Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia and Elkins Park for 17 years. Throughout that time and beyond, he has been actively involved in a number of local Jewish organizations and hospital chaplaincy programs and has been a frequent teacher of the Union for Reform Judaism’s “Introduction to Judaism” and “Taste of Judaism” classes in the Philadelphia area.

Rabbi Steinbrink joined Or Chadash in 1990 when it was a young, small and fledgling congregation. With his leadership and support, Or Chadash grew both in size of membership and breadth of programs. Read full bio here…
